I wrote this song in three different parts and we recorded it the same way.
Part A is a simple, pretty progression. It represents the fuzziness of a dream and also is supposed to have an "underwater" feel to it. "Selah" (which means a pause) applies to this part.
Part B is a bit spacier and starts incorporating a jazz feel, but still keeping the "underwater dream" feel represented by the abstract noise tracks I generated by inducing feedback while toying with other effects. There are some transitionary chords and then a key change that launch the song into:
Part C is a specific scene of the dream that would be remembered the next morning. We cut reverb out of most of the instruments to give this section a live jazz trio feel. The lyrics are inspired by the first time I swam in the ocean, which plays nicely into the water theme of the rest of the song.
Part C transitions through descending chords before returning to the tonic key for a return of Part A.
Incase it wasn't clear: The song represents a dream about water. It's mostly fuzzy, but the middle section is a specific scene in this hypothetical dream that is about swimming in the ocean.
lyrics
Turquoise and white
My body took flight
From the smooth ocean floor
I was tossed back and forth
The rhythm was mindless
The strength was relentless
But that peace left me
When I left the sea
Ageless and timeless and true
That salty, cool blue
