This song is about early mornings with my wife (You know, the lovely lady who's singing all of these songs with me? Yeah. We got married while this album was being recorded).
When our alarms go off in the morning, the first thing she usually says to me is "lamp time," which means, "It's time to get up. Turn on the lamp next to your face."
So that's where the name of this song, which is about mornings comes from.
Why did I choose to write a song about mornings? Because before we were married, Brooke and I never woke up right next to other people, and we never had a distinct routine to get ready and get to work on time. The whole idea of waking up next to my spouse in the quiet, vulnerable morning hours really struck me as beautiful.
Also, I tried to reference Paul and Linda McCartney's "Dear Boy" with the "doo doo doo doo" harmonies in the bridge.
lyrics
Your voice draws me
From my unconscious state of distant sleep
What a sweet release into this reality
Where you are is where my desires lead
Dew drops on the window
Blue, grey, and gold
Pastels cascade across the kitchen
Inside is warm, pour the coffee
'Cause outside is so cold
So cold
Hold the blankets tight
To shield my eyes from the steady stream of light
Now why would I fight for the night
Over the purest thing in my sight?
Dew drops on the window
Blue, grey, and gold
Pastels cascade across the kitchen
Inside is warm, pour the coffee
'Cause outside is so cold
So cold
