Sonically, this song is a tribute to Nels Cline and Annie Clark. I know it doesn't really compare, but the guitar solo is Nels Cline "freakout" inspired and the chord progressions are Annie Clark inspired. The chord progression during the chorus uses half-diminished seventh chords, which (I think) give this song a flavor that I've never had in my songs before.
Lyrically, I just applied a poem I had written about leaves. Super exciting, right?
lyrics
I know you'll see my ugly side
I know you'll see my faults
I know you will, just give it time
They don't stay hidden for long
September never happened
but that's one more month down.
The leaves have started giving up
& are getting pulled to the ground.
Did they ever stand a chance?
Or was it their life-long dream
to become a temporary decoration
for a simple season's scene?
Did they know it must be done
so they did it with all their hearts
so that future leaves may stand a chance
to be more permanent works of art?
